The Department of Learning Health Sciences (DLHS) at the University of Michigan Medical School is seeking a Financial Specialist Intermediate to provide support in the execution of budgets, financial planning, research pre-award budgeting, post-award reconciliation, and fiscal operations, including variance analysis and long-range forecasting.
Responsibilities*
DLHS is seeking a proven and experienced specialist to work with administrative and financial datasets, including research, facilities, financial and human resource systems, to support analyses of business operations and strategic initiatives.
Provide high-level analytical support, primarily focused on budgetary, planning and internal control issues. Monitor the fiscal health of the general fund, provide advice and facilitate the resolution of budget and financial issues. Identify and analyze options and develop recommendations of budgetary policies and procedures. Provide business analysis, summarize and evaluate information to keep leadership informed.
Review financial transactions for appropriateness and adherence to Medical School and university policies. Review statement of activity and gross pay register statements to verify accuracy. Review accounts and transactions to ensure appropriate fund and account classifications are used. Investigate discrepancies and irregularities.
Prepare and present accurate and timely reports for project investigators. Research accounting questions for faculty and staff. Support pre-award and post-award activities relating to university and sponsored grants and contracts. Create and manage effort distribution reports and make changes, as needed.
Duties will also include participation in faculty planning, effort reporting, space reporting, internal audit coordination, business plan development, commitment tracking, tuition assessment, and other new initiatives as needed.
The specialist will be expected to solve resource issues and propose options when there are conflicts. Ideal candidates are adaptable and willing to take on a broad variety of additional tasks to improve operational efficiency, prepare presentations to internal or external groups, and other duties as assigned, functioning with a high degree of independence and minimal day-to-day supervision to deliver projects in a timely and effective manner.

Required Qualifications*
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or equivalent degree with 2 -3 years’ experience. Strong finance, accounting, economics, statistics, and operations management expertise.
Significant experience in financial reporting and management. Ability to complete complex analytical, consultative and information support through analysis and report preparation. Proven ability to adapt knowledge, learn quickly, and handle multiple work streams simultaneously.
Ability to assess competing priorities, manage workflow and meet operational deadlines. Proven ability in problem analyses, methodology development, technical execution, and development of recommendations...
